A R T DAVID SWALES
On display at York City Screen Picturehouse Gallery from Oct 20 to late-November 2010. ’25 Frames’ is an ongoing series of photo-collages by artist David Swales. The work is an investigation into the physical properties of photographic film and moving image and the process by which we read, understand and respond to the medium. The title refers to the number of still frames required for 1 second of moving image film. Still photographic images have been overlaid, interrupted, erased, inverted and collaged together to form this work. 25 frames is accompanied by ‘Gulls’ - a series of experimental text based pieces by writer Lewis Christopher Young. Using a collage of film quotes and excerpts from novels and textbooks, organised and presented in a variety of formats, the work is a study into the recollection of striking scenes witnessed in films or read in books and how mediums can cross over to create a bigger picture, or a more confused one. Both bodies of work were created in unison with one another, and come together to form this joint exhibition. Below is an example of a few pieces in the exhibition. The work on display is available for sale, please contact either of the below for more information. Contacts:
